Short answer

Sink installation in Houston usually takes two to four hours of plumbing once the counter or vanity is in place: we set or connect the sink, build a new trap to match the bowl depth, connect the faucet and supplies, and run water to test every joint. Undermount sinks need the countertop installer to mount the bowl first.

The job

Getting the drain height and trap right for a new sink

New undermount kitchen sink drain and trap installed in a Houston home

A new sink rarely lines up with the old drain exactly. A deeper bowl drops the tailpiece lower, a double bowl needs a continuous waste or a center outlet, and a vessel sink sits several inches higher than the one it replaces. We rebuild the trap so it slopes properly to the trap arm in the wall, without a dip that holds debris or a rise that drains slowly.

We also look at the stops and the wall connection. Old galvanized trap arms and multi-turn stops tend to crumble when disturbed, so we'd rather replace them now than leave a weak point under a brand new countertop. If you're keeping your faucet, we reset it; if it's new, we install it with the sink. For anything bigger, such as moving the sink to an island, the job becomes kitchen remodel plumbing.

Undermount suits a new stone counter. Drop-in is the easy swap when the counter stays. Vessel sinks are a bathroom style choice that needs a matching faucet height.

Pricing

What moves the price of a sink installation

Setting a sink in the same spot is straightforward. Changes in drain height, bowl count or location are what add time.

  • Sink type

Drop-in sinks are simplest; undermount and vessel sinks need more drain and faucet work.

  • Same spot or new spot

Moving a sink means new drain, vent and supply runs instead of a reconnect.

  • Single or double bowl

Double bowls and double vanities add strainers, tailpieces and trap fittings.

  • Faucet and extras

A new faucet, disposal, filter or soap dispenser adds parts and connections.

  • Old connections

Corroded trap arms, galvanized nipples and old stops get replaced while open.

Typical planning range: $280 - $1,400 for sink installation including materials and labor, per HomeGuide (Octo). A guide figure, not our price; your quote follows the inspection.

The versions we see most

Undermount kitchen sinks

Undermount sinks hang from the underside of stone or solid-surface counters, so the order of work matters. The counter fabricator usually epoxies and clips the bowl to the stone; we come after the counter is set to install the strainers, faucet, disposal and trap. Deep single-bowl sinks often put the drain below the trap arm, which means lowering the connection in the wall or choosing an offset drain. We check that before the counter goes in so there's no surprise. A disposal adds weight to one bowl, so we confirm the clips and supports can carry it. We can also mount a new garbage disposal at the same visit.

Bathroom vanity sinks

Vanity sinks come as integrated tops, drop-in bowls, undermount bowls and vessels. Each one changes the drain height and the faucet setup. A vessel sink needs a taller faucet or a wall-mount spout, and its drain may sit too high for the old trap arm without an adjustment. Integrated tops arrive with the bowl molded in, so we set the top, install the pop-up drain and connect the trap. When a single vanity becomes a double, the second sink needs its own drain and supply lines, which we tie into the existing branch where the vent and pipe size allow it.

Utility and laundry sinks

A laundry sink gives you a place to soak stains, rinse paint brushes and drain small loads. Freestanding tubs sit on legs and connect with a standard trap; cabinet-style units hide the plumbing. The most common setup ties the sink drain into the washing machine standpipe or the same branch, which needs the right fittings so one doesn't back up into the other. In a garage, we also think about freezing on the exterior wall. We run hot and cold supplies with stops, and if you want the washer and sink served together, we can rework the box at the same time as an appliance hookup.

Scope of the work

What a sink installation includes

  • Measurement of drain height and trap arm before the counter goes in
  • Removal of the old sink and its trap
  • New basket strainers or pop-up drain
  • New P-trap and tailpieces sized to the new bowl
  • Faucet installation, yours or one we supply
  • New braided supply lines on working stops
  • Disposal or dishwasher reconnection where present
  • Fill-and-drain test of every bowl and joint

Local to southeast Houston

Older counters and drains in southeast Houston homes

A lot of sink swaps here happen in houses that are decades old. In South Belt/Ellington, close to 6,000 homes were built between 1960 and 1979 and more than 5,700 between 1980 and 1999. Kitchens and baths that age often still have the original trap arms and stops, and some have cast iron drain lines, which went out of new construction by the mid-1980s and can begin to deteriorate around 40 years in. A new sink is the right moment to check those connections.

Step by step

From an empty cabinet to a sink you can use

  1. Check the fit

We measure the drain height, trap arm and supplies against the new sink and counter.

  2. Disconnect the old sink

Water is shut off, the trap is removed and the old sink or top comes out.

  3. Set and seal

Drop-in sinks are set and sealed; undermount bowls are connected after the counter is set.

  4. Plumb the drain and supplies

New strainers, tailpieces and trap, then the faucet and braided supply lines.

  5. Fill and test

We fill each bowl, drain it fully and check every joint for drips.
