When every drain backs up
Main sewer line cleaning for Houston houses
Flush the toilet and water rises in the tub. Run the washer and the shower drain gurgles. When more than one fixture misbehaves at once, the clog is in the main line that carries everything to the street.

Short answer
Main sewer line cleaning in Houston clears the single 3 or 4 inch pipe that every drain in the house empties into. We open the cleanout outside, run a large sectional machine with a root cutting blade to the city tap, and confirm flow. If the house has no usable cleanout, we may go in through a toilet flange or roof vent.
What to watch for
Signs the clog is in the main line, not one drain
Water rises in the tub when a toilet flushes
Both share the blocked main below them.
Gurgling in several drains at once
Air is trapped behind a blockage in the building drain.
Water around the floor drain or cleanout cap
The line is full up to its lowest opening.
Sewage smell in the yard near the cleanout
Waste is sitting in the pipe instead of moving to the street.
Every drain slows at the same time
One common pipe is narrowing, often from roots.
The job
What a main line clog is, and why plunging a toilet won't fix it

Your house drains through branches that join into one building drain, and that pipe runs out under the yard to the city sewer tap. When it plugs, the lowest fixtures fill first, usually a tub or a ground floor shower, because the water has nowhere else to go. Plunging pushes the water around inside the house and can force it up through another drain.
The fix starts outside. We find the cleanout, often a capped pipe near the foundation or by the front walk, and let the trapped water drain if it can. Then a sectional machine with a heavy blade cuts through roots, wipes and grease all the way to the tap. Clearing the line tells us it was blocked, not why. If it comes back, a camera run shows whether roots are getting in through a crack or the pipe has a sag that holds debris.
The versions we see most
Tree root intrusion in the main line
Roots find sewer lines because the pipe carries water and warmth, and any joint that has opened even slightly lets a hair root in. Inside, that root grows into a mat that catches toilet paper and wipes. The first sign is often a slow toilet in the spring or after a dry spell, then a full backup. We cut the roots with a blade sized to the pipe and pull the cuttings out at the cleanout. Cutting clears the line but does not seal the joint, so the roots will return. Following up with jetting to scour root hairs stretches the time between calls.
Main line backups into tubs and showers

A backup into the tub is the most common way people learn their main line is plugged. The tub drain sits lowest in many single story slab houses, so sewage rises there first. Stop running water, do not run the washer or dishwasher, and keep people off that bathroom until it drains. We clear the line from the outside cleanout, then run water at the highest fixtures to make sure it carries. Afterward we'll talk through cleanup and, if the water was in the house for a while, what needs to be dried or disinfected.
Recurring main line clogs
If you have called a plumber for the same main line backup two or three times in a year, cleaning alone is no longer the answer. Something in the pipe keeps catching debris: a sagging belly that holds water, an offset joint that forms a lip, or a crack that lets roots back in. We clear the line first so you have use of the house, then run a camera to find the cause. Depending on what it shows, the next step is a spot sewer line repair or a lining job.
Step by step
How we clear a backed up main line
Stop the water
We have you stop using fixtures so the backup does not grow.
Find and open the cleanout
Outdoor cleanout first, or a toilet flange if there is none.
Run the sectional machine
A cutting blade works through the clog and any roots to the city tap.
Retrieve and flush
Cuttings come back out at the cleanout and we flush with high volume water.
Test from inside
We run tubs, toilets and the washer to confirm the line carries everything.

Why Houston main lines plug after heavy flooding
When neighborhoods flood, sewer lines take on silt, sand and debris along with the water. Harvey showed how wide that can be: the county's final report counted 4,610 flooded houses in Pasadena alone, and officials estimated around 3,000 homes inundated in Friendswood and 1,000 in Pearland. Lines that came through a flood like that can carry settled grit for years, and grit gives roots and paper something to catch on. If your house took water in a past storm and the main clogs often, tell us when you call.

Your options
Cable cleaning or jetting for a main line clog
| Compare | Sectional cable with root cutter | Hydro jetting |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Cuts a path through the clog and roots | Scours the full pipe wall with high pressure water |
| Good first choice when | The line is fully stopped and the house needs to drain now | The line is open but clogs repeatedly with grease or root hair |
| Pipe condition needed | Works on most pipe, including older clay | Pipe should be checked first; badly broken pipe is a poor fit |
| How long the result lasts | Until roots or debris build back up | Usually longer, since the wall is cleaned back to the pipe |
| Camera before or after | Recommended after a repeat clog | Recommended before, to confirm the pipe can take it |
Most backups start with the cable, because it gets your drains working quickly. If the same line keeps clogging, jetting after a camera check is usually the better next visit.
Pricing
What moves the cost of clearing a main sewer line
A main line call costs more than a single drain because of the machine, the length of the run and the cleanup. These are the things that change it most.
Cleanout access
A clear outdoor cleanout is fastest. Going through a toilet or a roof vent adds steps.
What is blocking the pipe
Paper and wipes clear quickly. Thick root masses need more cutting passes.
Distance to the city tap
Long yard runs or lines that cross a driveway mean more cable to feed and retrieve.
Camera follow-up
Recording the line after clearing is a separate step, often worth it on a repeat clog.
After hours timing
We answer around the clock, and night calls can change the visit charge.
Typical planning range: $200 - $500 for main sewer drain cleaning, per HomeGuide (Dece). That is a published range, not a quote. Your price comes after we look.
Common questions
Main Sewer Line Cleaning questions from Houston homeowners
Usually a capped 3 or 4 inch pipe sticking a few inches out of the ground near the foundation, often by a bathroom wall or along the front walk. Some older houses have none, and we can add one.
The line from your house to the city tap is usually the homeowner's. If the city main itself is backed up, several neighbors tend to have trouble at once, and you should report it to the city.
Avoid it. Every flush and every shower adds water to a pipe that cannot drain, and it rises at the lowest fixture in the house.
It can slow root regrowth for a while, but it does not seal the crack the roots came through. Only a repair or a liner stops them for good.
A healthy line rarely needs it. If roots are a known problem, many homeowners schedule cleaning every year or two while they plan a repair.
