A valve that actually closes
Main shut-off valve replacement for Houston houses
You tried to shut the water off and the handle would not move, or it spun freely and nothing stopped. The day you need that valve is the worst day to find out it is seized.

Short answer
Main shut-off valve replacement in Houston usually means removing an old gate valve that seized or leaks and installing a full-port ball valve that closes with a quarter turn. Water is shut at the meter for the swap, and on most houses the job takes an hour or two, with the house back on the same visit.
The job
Why old gate valves fail when you need them most

Many older Houston houses have a gate valve on the main: a round handle that turns many times to drop a brass wedge across the pipe. Gate valves sit open for years, and in hard water the threads and wedge collect scale. When someone finally tries to close one, the stem snaps, the wedge sticks halfway, or the packing around the stem starts dripping. Turning it harder is how a small problem becomes a flooded yard.
A ball valve replaces all of that with a ball that rotates a quarter turn. The lever shows open or closed at a glance, and a full-port ball valve does not narrow the pipe, so pressure stays the same. We shut the water at the meter, cut out the old valve and install the new one with fittings matched to the pipe. If you want automatic protection on the same section, a smart shut-off valve can go in right after it.
Scope of the work
What a main valve replacement covers
- Water shut at the meter and the house drained down
- Old gate or failing ball valve removed
- New full-port brass ball valve installed
- Fittings matched to copper, CPVC, PEX or galvanized pipe
- Drain port on the house side where space allows
- Pipe supported so the lever can be thrown safely
- Water restored slowly and every joint checked
- Quick walkthrough so everyone at home can find and close it
The versions we see most
Gate to ball valve upgrades
This is the most common version of the job. The gate valve at the house, usually where the main rises out of the ground or comes into the garage, gets replaced with a brass full-port ball valve. We drain the line, cut the pipe back to clean metal or plastic, and join the new valve with solder, press, crimp or threaded adapters depending on what is there. A drain port on the house side lets you empty the lines before a freeze or a repair. The pipe is supported so the lever can be thrown without twisting the joint.
Curb stop and meter-side valves

The valve in the meter box on your side of the meter is often the only shut-off a house has, and it is usually the oldest. If it leaks, will not close or is missing, we replace it or add a customer-side ball valve right after the meter. The utility's curb stop on the street side belongs to them, so if water is leaking there, we tell you to call them. Fixing the box valve often goes with repairing the service line when the coupling next to it is also corroded.
Fixture stop valves
Every sink, toilet and appliance should have its own shut-off, the small stop valves under the sink or behind the toilet. Old multi-turn stops seize and drip just like gate valves, and when one fails you end up shutting water off to the whole house for a simple faucet swap. We replace them with quarter-turn stops and new braided supply lines, usually all of them in one visit. It's a good time to swap a worn faucet if the supply lines are coming off anyway.

Hard water and freeze nights are hard on Houston valves
Houston's Main system averaged 135.5 ppm hardness in the 2025 water quality report, which the USGS classifies as hard, and long-term flow of hard water leaves scale on valve seats and stems. That is why gate valves that sit open for years seize. The February 2021 freeze showed what that costs: with lows of 13 degrees at Bush Intercontinental, the city saw a sharp rise in breaks, and homeowners who could not close a seized valve watched water run until help arrived.
Step by step
How the old valve comes out and the new one goes in
Shut at the meter
Water off at the meter and the lines drained from a low faucet.
Remove the old valve
Pipe cut back to clean, sound material on both sides.
Fit the new valve
Full-port ball valve joined with fittings matched to the pipe.
Support and test
Pipe braced, water restored slowly and every joint checked.

Pricing
What changes the price of a valve replacement
The valve is a small part. What it takes to reach it and join it to the existing pipe sets most of the cost.
Valve location
An exposed riser or garage main is quick; a valve buried or boxed in a wall takes longer.
Pipe material
Copper, CPVC, PEX and galvanized each need different fittings and transitions.
Line size
One-inch mains need a larger valve body than three-quarter-inch lines.
Condition of nearby pipe
Corroded or brittle pipe next to the valve may need a short section replaced.
Fixture stops added
Replacing every stop in the house adds parts and time per fixture.
Typical planning range: $370 - $592 for main water shut-off valve replacement in Houston, TX, per Angi (Upda). Use it for budgeting; the real number depends on what we find on site.
Before you call
What you can safely try with a stubborn valve
| Situation | What you can safely do | When to call us |
|---|---|---|
| Main valve will not turn | Try gentle back-and-forth pressure by hand only, no pipe wrench. | If it still will not move, before the stem snaps. |
| Stem drips when the valve moves | Snug the packing nut a quarter turn with a wrench. | If the drip continues or the nut is corroded. |
| Valve closes but water still runs | Close the meter-side valve with a meter key if you have one. | Soon, since the house valve is no longer sealing. |
| Stop under a sink is seized | Leave it and shut the main for the faucet job. | When you want quarter-turn stops at every fixture. |

Common questions
Main Shut-Off Valve Replacement questions from Houston homeowners
On most Houston slab homes it is where the main rises from the ground near the front hose bib, or in the garage wall. There is usually a second valve in the meter box on your side of the meter.
If it turns and closes fully, it can wait. If it is stiff, drips at the stem or you are unsure it seals, a ball valve swap is a small job that saves a bad night later.
We shut the customer-side valve or use the meter valve on your side. The curb stop on the street side belongs to the utility, so we only touch that with their okay.
A full-port ball valve does not restrict flow. If anything, pressure can improve slightly when it replaces an old gate valve that was partly blocked with scale.
Closing and reopening it once or twice a year keeps a ball valve moving freely and tells you it still works before you need it.
